In a recent press conference, the Justice and Human Rights Advocates (JHRA) have raised alarm over a series of actions by Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State, which they describe as a direct assault on the judiciary, posing a significant threat to democracy and good governance in the state.
Allegations of Intimidation and Disregard for Judicial Processes
The JHRA detailed multiple incidents highlighting the governor’s alleged interference with judicial independence:
- Violent Assault on Judges: On February 19, 2025, thugs reportedly associated with Governor Alia held 19 judges hostage for nearly five hours, vandalizing the Chief Judge’s office and assaulting security personnel.
- Disruption of Religious Gatherings: The administration has been implicated in the disruption of church services attended by judges and prominent citizens, notably on May 12 and November 10, 2024.
- Disregard for Court Orders: Governor Alia’s appointment of caretaker local government chairmen, despite a National Industrial Court ruling restraining such actions, exemplifies a blatant disregard for judicial authority and the rule of law.
- Attempted Unconstitutional Removal of the Chief Judge: Collaborations with the Benue State House of Assembly to remove Chief Judge Maurice Ikpambese over unsubstantiated allegations have been condemned by legal bodies, emphasizing the unconstitutionality of such moves.
Erosion of Judicial Independence
